Standing Up Peeing: Peeing Outside The Border of Eroticism
Lim, Boram- Art Theory

Jia Chang's exhibition has become the latest issue in the realm of art for the reason of using the images of women's standing up peeing. The spectators, who visited her exhibition or heard about it through the internet, began to appeal their various opinions and eventually made it an issue to be told according to their own concerns, i.e. ethical or political one for sexual roles in a society. Because spectators are apt to appreciate artworks with their own experiences, rather than with an object itself, careful attention must be paid to her works which can invite ambiguity.
On the one hand, 'women's standing up peeing' can be seen as the act of eroticism. However, it is not intended to depict the sexuality in such a secular way. In the regard, the act of 'women's standing up peeing' she chose to show can be said to be at the risk of standing at the border between two aspects of sexuality. On the other hand, it can be seen as the act of leading to the spectacle experience of unique eroticism. Since her works are in forms of performative art, we would go through witnessing the artist's own experience being merged into an experience of spectator's own. In that moment, the artist and her works as well as spectators undergo some changes where the artist's own experience is to be interpreted and explicated according to demand of the public, the press, and the critics.
I think that it is not the simple talk about sexuality that Chang aims at making in <Standing Up Peeing>. If we can extend our interest from the 'sex and gender' problem to the 'body and excrement' problem, we can ascertain that she is not interested in the resistance to sexual problems and absolute value in patriarchal societies. Her reason to use the image of women's standing up peeing comes from her interest in 'abjection and body' problem, not in woman's body as a social entity. In short, she has her own interest in woman's body.
The abject, in J. Kristeva's meaning, usually brings out the spontaneous revulsion (such as horror and vomit) of subject, but, on the contrary, the one, in Chang's works, offers aesthetic experience to spectator. Due to her emphasis on beauty of female body, even the act of expulsion of excrement looks aesthetic: by using photographical black and white contradictions, she gives dramatic effect on the women's poses in her photos. Looking like the theatrical ones that would appeared in fashion magazines, they reveal the artist's aesthetic intention to stress on the bodily beauty of the act of peeing rather than the act of peeing itself. This aesthetic look of the work confirms again the fact that she intends to tell neither suppressiveness nor provocativeness of sexuality through female body images in <Standing Up Peeing>. Rather, she intends to show us that peeing can be thought as an interesting, amusing and natural act of human beings.
This intention is also found in the process of making her works. She made a documentation film by taping the whole process of creation of her photos. This film shows how her models thought her works: the models are making conversation with the photographer pleasantly; laughing when asked to pose as magazine models do; telling what they felt when they have done that. Now, the private act of peeing becomes the common act of sharing. The hideous and filthy experience of the abject surpasses subject's desire of expulsion and is sublimated into interesting and amusing pleasure. In other words, Chang states clearly in the film that it has no point in the claim that women's standing up peeing is uneasy thing in the physical, social or ethical point of view. Thus I believe that <Standing Up Peeing> makes interesting and unique eroticism of Chang's own sprung up at the moment of experiencing this ambiguous spectacle.
