In Chang Jia¡¯s work, as traditional gender role is reversed, this sadomasochism appears not as simple obscene picture but more as a symbolic gesture of compensation freed from the role upon which social tradition has imposed. This is verified in the scenes of not a harmful act but to some extent ridiculous play. Played according to the controlled and agreed scenario, this theater is about ruling of authority and obedience. Such sexual subculture is ¡®highly formalized social interrelationship, ritual, or ceremony¡¯ which ¡®makes individuals reconcile otherwise becoming an enemy¡¯ (T. Airaksinen). A man and a woman in Chang Jia¡¯s work are nothing but a stage actor and actress playing their roles. This playful and theatrical character corresponds to fictional quality running in her work and through it, she attempts each other¡¯s infinite symbolic exchange and negates all binarity including a man-woman relationship.
