My exhibition, <OMERTA-The Mute Consent>, is composed of the photos of women who are urinating in the standing-up pose and other objects using urine as a major medium such as a tree structure with glass balls containing urine which is distilled and watering plants and some urine objects which were made by attaching salt crystals to women’s items. The urinating women in my works have various types of bodies of different shapes and ages. Their faces are covered and the photographs are rather focused on the act of peeing itself. However, the women’s poses seem somewhat unstable, which might have been caused by their unconscious uneasiness in mind not to let fall the urine drops on their legs. Peeing in the exhibition hall is not a big deal. But, why do these scenes make people feel uncomfortable to look at? Is it wrong for women to pee standing up? Someone says that women have the physical structure which does not allow them to urinate in a standing up position.I remember imitating boys’ peeing posture out of curiosity a couple of times when I was young. I could not make it at that time. Like me, most women already know that urinating in the standing up position is impossible for them because of their physical structure. However, this is because not just of the fear not to wet their bodies but of the idea that women and men are physically different has been fixed in their mind since young. From time to time, I’ve been told that men should also pee sitting down not to stain the toilet with their urine drops. This could be actually happening at homes where wives have strong power but it sounds pretty unfamiliar to me.I hope that my 4thsolo exhibition could be a starting point where new buds can begin to grow from the excretion of deviation. The seeds growing on the cotton wool soaked with urine, the salt content forming a beautiful salt pillar. The impossible possibility these things are creating is about a something spiritual which does not really exist like utopia but only to be realized through our imagination. The exhibition hall becomes a ‘non-existing place’ made up with body wastes in the pictures. Like underground secret meeting place, it becomes the stronghold of ‘Omerta,’ the mute consent, which should be kept secret from the general public.
이번 <OMERTA-침묵의 계율>展은 서서 오줌을 누는 여성의 모습과 그 오줌이라는 매체를 오브제로 활용한 여러 작품들로 구성된다. 나무로 상징되는 형태에 걸려있는 링거 병 속에 들어있는 오줌이 증류의 과정을 거쳐 식물에게 수분을 공급하고, 그 수분으로 식물이 커가는 모습이 있는가 하면, 여성들이 자주 사용하는 물건들에 소금결정체를 붙여 넣어 만든 오줌 오브제들도 있다.
작품 속에 등장하는 서서 오줌을 누는 여성의 모습은 제각기 다른 체형과 연령의 몸을 보여준다. 또한 그녀들의 얼굴은 가려져 있으며 사진은 볼일을 보는 행위에 초점이 맞춰져 있다. 그런데 그녀들의 자세가 어딘지 불안정해 보인다. 그것은 자칫하다간 사타구니가 뜨끈하게 적셔질 수도 있다는 무의식적인 불안감이 그러한 자세로 나타나게 된 것이다. 전시장에서 오줌을 눈다는 것이 그다지 큰 사건도 아닐 것 같은데, 이 장면이 왜 이리 보는 사람의 마음을 불편하게 만드는 것일까? 여성들이 서서 오줌을 눈다는 것이 잘못된 것일까? 누군가는 여성이 신체적으로 절대 서서 오줌을 눌 수 없는 구조를 가졌다고 한다.
내가 어렸을 때, 남자아이들이 우리와는 다르게 볼일을 보는 모습에 호기심이 생겨 몇 번 따라 해 보려고 했지만, 결국 실패로 끝난 기억이 있다. 이렇게 나처럼 대부분의 여성들은 신체구조상 서서 볼일을 본다는 것이 불가능하다는 것을 이미 알고 있다. 그것은 단지 아랫도리를 다 적실 수 있다는 불안감 때문만이 아니라 이미 그 어린 나이부터 남성과 여성의 신체가 다르다라는 일종의 경계지움이 각인되어왔기 때문일 것이다.
요즘은 남자들이 소변을 볼 때 변기주변에 오줌이 튄다며 남자들도 앉아서 볼일을 봐야 한다고 하는 이야기를 듣곤 한다. 부인의 발언권이 센 가정에서나 있을 법한 일이겠지만, 아무튼 이런 이야기들은 분명 지금까지와는 다른 생경한 풍경이 가져왔다.
나의 네 번째 개인전은 바로 일탈의 배설물이 새로운 생명을 싹을 틔우는 출발점이 될 수 있기를 바란다. 오줌에 찌든 솜 위에서 자라나라는 씨앗들, 아름다운 형상의 소금기둥이 되어가는 염분들. 이것들이 만들어내는 불가능한 가능성. 그것은 마치 유토피아처럼 어디에도 없지만 상상만으로 가능한 그 정신적인 무엇인가에 대한 것이다. 전시장 안은 사진 속 배설물로 이루어진 ‘존재하지 않는 장소’가 된다. 마치 지하 비밀 장소처럼 일반적인 사람들에게 누설되어서는 안되는 침묵의 계율 ‘Omerta’의 본거지가 되는 것처럼 말이다.
