An abstract vision inspires; pictures of peeing stand tall

Chang Jia's large-scale photographs at the Walsh Gallery succeed beyond all expectation at doing something that is difficult in contemporary culture: being transgressive. Moreover, they succeed in a way that almost never is attempted anymore, as transgression is conveyed through objects that have a concurrent aesthetic power.
The artist advertised for female models on her Web site. Six women responded. Each appears nude in two poses of her choosing. The catch is they had to be standing -- urinating. And both parts of that constitute the transgression, as the woman assumes the stance of a man to make public an act usually performed in private. In the West, the effect of it still is threatening; in the artist's native Seoul, it is bound to be even more defiant.
The life-size black-and-white photographs that crop out the women's faces also present the bodies as if they were related to images of antique sculptures or modern paintings of bathers. This artistic association exists alongside the transgression, complementing rather than weakening it. When it's gone, as in a color video on the shooting of the photos, you feel its absence, and the work as a whole suffers. But when it¡¯s there, the artist takes on an authority that is absent from photo and video pieces that sometimes provoke strongly but seldom fully satisfy.
